Nezumi is the brainchild of Stockholm based designer, vintage car and watch enthusiast, David Campo Cardenes. The name Nezumi came from a book David read as a child about a Japanese ‘Robin Hood’ called Nezumi Kozō whom stole from the rich samurai and gave to the poor.

Born into poverty, Nezumi Kozō grew up during the Edo period, where survival demanded resourcefulness. From a young age, he showcased extraordinary talent in nimble acrobatics and sleight of hand. His remarkable agility earned him the moniker ‘Nezumi’ (meaning rat/mouse in Japanese), a nod to his ability to scurry away like a rat when danger approached.

One fateful evening, Nezumi found himself in the opulent residence of Lord Masamune, a symbol of greed and cruelty. Inside, among the treasures amassed through years of oppression, Nezumi made a life-changing encounter. A young girl named Sakura, the daughter of Lord Masamune, saw beyond his reputation and recognized his noble intentions. Together, Sakura and Nezumi formed an extraordinary alliance. Their shared desire for justice ignited a plan to expose Lord Masamune’s corruption and liberate the people from tyranny. With Nezumi’s unmatched network of informants and Sakura’s insider knowledge, their scheme succeeded, bringing hope and freedom to the oppressed masses.

Nezumi Studios support numerous charities, hence the name.

Now on to the watch. The aesthetics of the limited edition Kozō chronograph and its packaging is deeply inspired by Japanese culture and the brand’s history working with denim goods.

The triple coloured dial features a deep indigo blue surrounded by an off-white chapter ring with red markings and lume dots for each hour. The sub-registers at 3 and 9 are off-white and the red 6 o’clock running seconds dial resembles the Japanese national flag. The index and lumed hour and minute hands are brushed steel, sub-register hands are dark blue and the chronograph hand is bright red. The case is made of brushed 316L stainless steel and features a tachymeter scale on the fixed bezel.

The Kozō chronograph is sold exclusively on their indigo blue canvas strap (below) that was developed using recycled ocean plastics and apple pomace discarded by the beverage industry from Italian food manufacturers. These materials perfectly complement the watch and its nature in the best of ways.
