Sherwood Watches Inspired By British Secret Agent

Sherwood Watches is the brainchild of Glynn Reynolds, a graphic designer from Nottinghamshire, a stone’s throw away from the world famous Sherwood Forest, home of the legend that is Robin Hood.

Glynn’s love for watches began as a teenager in the late 1980s and early 1990s, staring his collection with Casio digital watches. Over the years, he has admired various watch designs and bought more than he can remember, but he never found the ‘perfect’ watch design. This all changed in 2019 when he launched his Instagram account @glynn_reynolds

Using his skills as a graphic designer, he spent much time ‘photoshopping’ existing watches to improve their aesthetics – and create unique designs. They received much interest from fellow watch enthusiasts so he decided to take the plunge and start Sherwood Watches.

The Commander (above), is the first Sherwood timepiece, which is designed to be extremely versatile as a dress/diver watch. Inspired by the world-famous British secret agent, it needed to be able to be tough enough for a swim in the ocean and stylish enough to compliment a tuxedo while playing the tables at the casino in Monte Carlo. This watch can’t be shaken by water but will cause a stir – a cocktail of elegance.

The design of timing bezel has its own unique look. Instead of a traditional Super Luminova ‘pip’ at the 12 o’clock position, there is a 20-minute section that is central for symmetry, and if you need to time anything you can move it to the start of the 20-minute section. This seems to be as intuitive as a traditional bezel. The bezel is extremely elegant at just 3mm and compliments the look of The Commander watch.

Inside The Commander is the Miyota 9039, which is a 24 jewels high-beat automatic movement. This calibre is part of Miyota’s Premium Automatic line. It is a 3-hand display with no date option. It has an accuracy of -10 ~ +30 seconds per day. The casebook features an engraving of the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest – an ancient giant that is Britain’s biggest oak tree, with a canopy spread of 28 metres and a trunk circumference of 11 metres.

It also offers a double-domed sapphire crystal, which are immediately appealing aesthetically due to their enhanced translucency which is increased with the application of an anti-reflective coating.

Priced at £450.00, The Commander comes in three dial colours, Green, Blue and Black.

Sherwood Commander On The Wrist

When you put on the Sherwood Commander it sits very comfortably on the wrist. The dial is well balanced, clearly legible and works well in ‘forest’ green, complimented by the matching bezel. The 40mm case is well finished and with a depth of 13.9mm fits easily under the sleeve.

When you are in low light or darkness, you will not be disappointed with the high level of BG W9 lume on the dial and hands (above). The very high standard of finishing is evident on the stainless steel strap which has brushed outer links and polished inner links which are extremely comfortable (below). The ‘screw in’ crown on which the ‘Arrow’ logo is adorned is of a good size and allows easy setting when required. The sweeping second hand in the shape of an arrow (in honour of the legendary Robin Hood) is also clearly visible.

The stainless steel case back is clearly engraved with the Great Oak in Sherwood Forest (below) an inspiration for the brand’s founder who lives a stone’s through from the forest. It’s always good to see the movement, but given it’s a fairly standard, Miyota 9039 Automatic, it doesn’t take anything away from the watch. Given that its waterproof to 200m it’s probably best to retain the stainless steel back.

Overall the Sherwood Commander at £450 represents extremely good value and an excellent addition to any collection as an everyday watch.
