Vacheron Constantin Overseas Grand Complication Openface First Minute Repeater

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Grand Complication Openface First Minute Repeater

Vacheron Constantin expands the Overseas collection with its most ambitious model to date: the Grand Complication Openface.

This marks the first time a minute repeater has been integrated into an Overseas watch, accompanied by a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar, and a power reserve indicator—all within a titanium case that remains true to the line’s elegant sports watch ethos.

At its heart is the Calibre 2755 QP, a manually wound movement measuring just 7.9 mm thick and composed of 602 components. Derived from the Tour de l’Île project, it combines three major complications in a compact, water-resistant architecture—an uncommon achievement for minute repeaters, which traditionally require open cases for sound transmission.

Ensuring water resistance while accommodating a sliding minute repeater mechanism necessitated a complete redesign of the 44.5 mm Overseas case. The caseback was re-engineered over 18 months to house the chime system without compromising the collection’s hallmark slim, curved profile. The result: a watch that marries technical excellence with wearability and rugged elegance.

The minute repeater features a proprietary centripetal governor—developed in-house—that regulates the strike rhythm silently and precisely. This intricate mechanism is visible through the sapphire caseback, secured by a hand-polished arc-shaped bridge in 18K gold. The bridge’s inertia weights bear the initials of founder Jean-Marc Vacheron, a nod to the brand’s heritage.

The tourbillon, beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz), features a redesigned and hand-finished bridge structure. On the reverse side, the architecture has been opened up to offer a clearer view of the rotating cage, enhancing visual lightness and showcasing the movement’s depth.

The movement’s decoration adheres to the strictest traditions of haute horlogerie: bevelled and satin-brushed bridges, circular satin-grained wheels, mirror-polished repeater hammers, and Geneva stripes—all executed by hand.

Aesthetically, the Openface lives up to its name. The sapphire dial exposes the full mechanics of the movement beneath, while floating 18K white gold hour markers add dimension. To enhance legibility, the calendar and time functions are framed in blue metallised rings, engraved in white.

The watch is crafted in grade 5 titanium—lightweight yet robust—with a mix of sandblasted, satin-brushed, and polished finishes that play beautifully with light. The integrated bracelet, also in titanium, features Vacheron Constantin’s tool-free interchangeability system, and is accompanied by blue rubber and blue alligator straps.

The Overseas Grand Complication Openface is a rare fusion of mechanical complexity, visual transparency, and everyday wearability—pushing the boundaries of modern haute horlogerie within a contemporary sport-luxury framework.
